Leiden Castle

Leiden Castle is a fine example of a motte-and-baily castle in The Netherlands. The castle dates from the early middle ages and it consists of a 12 metres high artificial hill and a large ring-shaped wall on the top. Its main function was to control the surroundings of the castle, that was strategically situated in two arms of the Rhine River. Also, the castle was used by the local people as a refuge in case of war or floodings.

Now, the castle stands in the middle of Leiden's historical city centre, offering a great view of the town and its environments.
